Dear Friends and Neighbors,
As you have likely heard by now, Gov. Jay Inslee has moved Pierce County back to Phase 2 and subsequently denied Executive Bruce Dammeier's request for more COVID vaccines. That's puzzling when you consider the fact the state Department of Health was responsible for a technical glitch that left Pierce County under-ordering vaccines in the first place.
Yesterday, every Republican lawmaker in the three counties Gov. Inslee rolled back to Phase 2 signed on to a letter I authored to the governor regarding his decision.
In my view, the governor's decision underscores the critical need for the Legislature to pass emergency powers reform this session. Later today, House Republicans will attempt to force a vote on Rep. Drew MacEwen's House Bill 1557, which would cause states of emergency to expire after 60 days unless renewed by the Legislature. The bill would also allow the Legislature to terminate, on its own authority, an emergency declaration.
These are reasonable reforms that would bring our state in line with what many other states are already doing. Currently, Washington ranks as one of the worst states in the country in terms of governmental balance of power. That needs to change before session adjourns on April 25.
